About This Quote

The quote, “Tell me, Doctor, are you afraid of death?” is a literary question that appears in the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. The main character, Christopher, is an 18-year-old boy who has Asperger’s Syndrome. He is also very intelligent and is autistic in his thinking process. One day, he accidentally kills his neighbor’s dog with a lawnmower.

It is at this point that he is asked the same question by his doctor. The doctor asks Christopher whether or not he was scared when he killed the dog. The answer Christopher gives to this question is not what most people would expect.
